Preparing for a Storm

It is important to have a family disaster plan. think about these questions:

  • where will you be when disaster strikes? Members of you family could be at school or work or traveling
  • How will your family members link up with each other?-disasters, especially hurricanes, may force you to evacuate, or you may be confined to your home with no electricity
  • What will you do if basic services-water, electric, gas or telephones (including cell phones) are disrupted?

Gather info and create a disaster plan.  Meet with your family to discuss the dangers of hurricanes and why you need to prepare. If you are forced to evacuate in a hurry, family memebers may be at different locations.  Agree on a place to meet incase you cannot return to your neighborhood.  Choose an out-of-town friend or relative to be the check in contact for family members to call should anyone become seperated.  Discuss steps you will take if you are advised to evacuate and identify the quickest and safest routes out of the area.  Official hurricane evacuation route signs are the easiest to spot along the highways.

Teach children how and WHEN to call 911 for emergency or your local EMS number.

Learn basic CPR and first aid

Keep enough supplies for at least 5 days

Secure all outdoor items- patio furniture, grills, planters and plant boxes, childrens toys, dog houses, garbage cans...Propane tanks are properly stored and tied down

Fill sinks and bathtubs with water

Make sure all vehicles and generators are filled with gas

go to ATM get cash

Know how to turn off gas/electric and water in case of emergency

Make sure car has state maps-know evacuation plan and routes including alternative routes as many standard routes may become impassable

If you dont have one....GET ONE...a corded phone as many with remotes or wireless ones are useless when the power goes out

Clean out your gutters and if possible remove any dead trees from property.

Get a Hurricane kit ready-include in it:

  • cooler (2) one for food one for just ice

Also..for insurance purposes take a home inventory.  Do a video of all equipment, furniture and belongings in case of total catastrophe.

Store pictures of home inventory on www.snapfish.com or www.shutterfly.com or a disc or jumpdrive and store in an offsite location in case of emergency.
